Dobie Gray may have had what amounted to a huge hit with this song in 1973, but he had been around for a long while prior to becoming that ubiquitous ‘overnight success’.

He had a big hit earlier on in his career, that being ‘The In Crowd’ in 1965.

He worked as a solo artist, as a member of a band, he acted, and also appeared in musical theatre, most notably as a member of the cast in the U.S. stage production of the musical ‘Hair’.

This huge hit, ‘Drift Away’, recorded in 1973 has sold well over a million copies, and besides being mentioned in the Top 100 R & B songs ever recorded, it also did well in the mainstream charts, rising as high as Number 5.

The song was written by Mentor Williams and includes a very catchy Guitar riff, performed by Reggie Young.

He had a long career on the back of this one song, and later concentrated on songwriting, doing songs for noted artists such as Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Charley Pride, Don Williams and George Jones.

His career has spanned a number of the music genre fields, and besides musical theatre, he has had songs in the Pop, Soul, and Country areas as well.
