Does it make sense for our homes and businesses to be all electric? Absolutely not! But that’s where many communities in America are headed. In Berkeley California, the City Council has voted to ban natural gas in all new low-rise residential buildings. This bad idea is spreading to other parts of the country. If it accelerates, the all electric contagion will have serious negative consequences for us all.

My wife has started the process of “virtual house hunting” for our eventual departure from the fetid swamps of Sacramento, CA, and looking on Zillow.com and Realtor.com for homes somewhere around the “Hill Country” area of Texas, northwest of San Antonio.
It’s astonishing how few Texas houses offer natural gas heating. Most of them are electric heat. We figure that whenever the real estate listing includes three fireplaces for a 2,000 square foot residence, it’s a sure bet that the electric heat is too expensive to run.
I fully expected that Texas would be prime territory for gas heating, but apparently that’s not the case.

Why would a builder do that unless electric is cheap or there’s no gas to that area? Ask the Realtors.

Or maybe some elected officials are as Socialist-Communist as CA is and the voters as dumb. Hmmm?

More likely, I think, is that a lot of these homes were built during the FIRST big “All Electric!” push. I do plan to research if natural gas lines exist in some of these neighborhoods, and how much it would cost to run gas to the house.
And then, of course, how much it would cost to install a gas water heater and a gas furnace. A few of the listings include a “gas fireplace log” which would certainly SEEM to indicate that there is gas into the house.
Living here in northern California, most houses have gas heat and gas hot water, which is a WHOLE lot more efficient than electric heat. And since I believe that “climate change” is more likely to bring COLDER weather, I’m interested in getting prepared for that.
