UN Bias: Savages Trump For What Obama Did

More fake news attacking Trump, courtesy of an outrageously biased United Nations and Leftist media

An uncritical Reuters headline says it all: “America’s poor becoming more destitute under Trump: U.N. expert”.

The Hill’s equally blase headline: “UN poverty official: Trump exacerbating inequality.”

The report — really a first-person narrative — released earlier this month, ripped President Trump for his “contempt” and “hatred of the poor.”

The report cited 18.5 million Americans who live in extreme poverty, and massive U.S. defense spending at the expense of social programs.

Only one problem: As Chuck DeVore, vice president of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, points out, the data on which the study was based came from 2016.

That’s right, President Obama’s last year. So does that make it “fake news”?

Worse, the U.N. report uses misleading and “wildly inaccurate” Census data to bolster its claims of 18.5 million living in the U.S. under extreme poverty. The real level, as a separate study reveals, is “less than half that.”

The report is a distortion, little else. The fact is, unemployment at 3.8% is a 29-year low. Food stamp recipients in 2017 numbered 42.1 million, 2 million below Obama’s last year and the lowest since 2010.

The Guardian revels in this propaganda, too. It’s absolutely cartoonish:

Donald Trump is deliberately forcing millions of Americans into financial ruin, cruelly depriving them of food and other basic protections while lavishing vast riches on the super-wealthy, the United Nations monitor on poverty has warned.

So which UN official peddled this anti-Trump garbage?

Philip Alston, U.N. special rapporteur on extreme poverty, called on U.S. authorities to provide solid social protection and address underlying problems, rather than “punishing and imprisoning the poor”…

The Australian, a veteran U.N. rights expert and New York University law professor, will present his report to the United Nations Human Rights Council later this month.

Alston, brother of a former Howard Government cabinet minister, really does reduce Trump to the crudest Leftist stereotype, presenting him as a dangerous monster in a speech soon after Trump’s election:

The world as we in the human rights movement have known it in recent years is no longer. The populist agenda that has made such dramatic inroads recently is often avowedly nationalistic, xenophobic, misogynistic, and explicitly antagonistic to all or much of the human rights agenda….

As each new wave of bad news sweeps in, most of us are now suffering from commentary and analysis fatigue….

We might not yet know exactly what policies the new Trump Administration will adopt either bilaterally or in multilateral forums, or how exactly the political chemistry among the leaders of the new world disorder will work, but we know the basics in terms of the challenges that will confront human rights advocates.

We know from President Trump himself because he has consistently advocated measures that would abrogate civil liberties for American citizens, not to mention non-citizens, a great many of whom were traumatized by the very act of his election…

I want to finish by adapting the old admonition by Pastor Martin Niemöller made during the period between the two world wars. Today’s version, at least for a New York resident like myself, would be simply:

First they came for the Hispanics, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Hispanic.

Then they came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Muslim.

Then they came for the Black Lives Matter activists, and I did not speak out—because I am not Black.

Then they degraded and belittled women, and I did not speak out—because I am not a woman.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.

This is the word of the United Nations. Trump is to be savaged for what Obama actually did. Trump a monster who will come after everyone. Trump who deliberately wants to hurt the poor. Trump a monster who looms larger in the UN’s fevered mind than the true despots running China, Russia and swathes of the Middle East.

And we fund it.
