This is the continuing Post, where each Saturday, I will detail the power consumption for the Base Load in Australia for the previous week. This will show what is actually meant by the term Base Load, and that is the minimum daily power consumption at its lowest point. Power consumption never falls below this point.

Here in Australia, that level of power is 18,000MW. (See data for the Running Weekly Average For Base Load below)

This data I have collated below is for this last week, and is for the five States connected to the Australian grids, every State east of the Western Australian border, and here I will show that data for each of those five States, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania.

As you can see from these numbers, that huge amount of power is being supplied mainly by coal fired power, and on most days that coal fired power provides 80% or more of that level of power, at that time, when power consumption is at its lowest level, that total of 18,000MW.

All of this data is taken at a single point in time, and that is at 4AM of every day, when nearly all of us are sound asleep.

Comments For This Last Week

I have used this Series to concentrate on that time of minimum power consumption here across this vast coverage area, and while that is the main thrust of what I have written, it concentrated only on that one point in time, referred to as the Base Load. After almost a year of doing this data on a daily basis, that Base Load figure of 18000MW has been remarkably stable at that point, varying on a Season tot Season basis by only around 2%. Some days have been lower, and some higher, but the average has stayed almost the same across the year.

At the same time, I have also been detailing the amount of that total which comes from coal fired sources alone, and that total has remained almost as stable as the Base Load number, as well, stuck on 80%+, and ponder that for a minute. When 18000MW is required absolutely, 14600MW of that comes SOLELY from coal fired sources alone. There is just no way that can be sourced from any other method of power generation here in Australia.

Now, in conjunction with this Series, I am undertaking a new task to do a Series on the daily power generation from every source.

As you can see from the above data, I have detailed those totals for that 4AM point in time of the Base Load, and also added the weekly totals for what that total is at the Peak Power consumption time of the day, at 5.30to 6PM. That total is averaging above 27000MW each week for the average, again with some days higher than others.

What this new Series is showing me is the averages for every source of power generation for every day.

Again, it is coal fired power which is delivering the vast bulk of all that power on that daily basis. Coal fired power is actually delivering around 72% of all the power being consumed on a daily basis. What was most surprising about compiling and then detailing this data is that coal fired power remains relatively stable at that figure, and when extra power is required, it comes in the main from natural gas fired sources and hydro power sources. If wind power is high or low, it has no effect at all on coal fired power, and that surprised me. The people who control the grids are using those other two sources, natural gas and hydro as the ‘moderator’ for wind power. if wind power is high, then those other two are low, and when wind power is low, then natural gas and hydro are high. Coal fired power just hums along all the time, delivering what it always does deliver, he huge amounts of constant and reliable power required to keep the Country actually running.

There are only 48 of those coal fired Units at 16 power plants in three States, incidentally, the three States which consume almost 90% of all generated power. Those Units are critical to the delivery of power across the Nation, and they do it day in day out, and some of them have been doing that for almost 50 years now, and the most recent of those plants to begin operation was now almost 12 years back, so there is still a long life left for coal fired power in Australia.

There just is no substitute.
