I heard this song the other day on the radio, and instantly remembered it. I knew the song because it was so obvious from the piano opening, the song made famous by Ray Charles in the early 90s, the song which actually won him a Grammy Award. When the singer came in, it was different. You expect that voice of Ray Charles. and then I noticed it was that unmistakable voice of Leon Russell, and that’s what tricked me somewhat, because I couldn’t actually remember immediately that he had sung the song. Then the second thing that happened was that as the song progressed a little further, I thought of my first car, which was odd, because that was way before the Ray Charles hit of this song.

I have often said in these Music Posts that a certain song can take you back to the time when you first remember the song, and I’ve learned to trust those thoughts. It was odd because I remember most strongly that familiar Ray Charles song, and that was more than 20 years after y time with that first car I owned.

Luckily, these days I can chase it up on the Internet, and lo and behold, it was Leon Russell who wrote and first recorded this song, from his first album which was self titled. Then I vaguely remember that the song was a minor hit on some local radio stations here in Australia in 1970, which fits in neatly with those thoughts of my first car. I was in the Air Force, and I would drive a lot, and sometimes on those long trips, all I had was late night radio. I also remember that Leon Russell was quite popular here in Australia between 1970 and 1971 and had at least four songs that I can remember, foremost among them his Bob Dylan cover of A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall in 1971 and then his own song Tight Rope in 1972. I also vaguely remember from the time of this featured song today, 1970, that there was a lot of talk on the radio of his wild Tour with Joe Cocker and Friends on that famous Mad Dogs And Englishmen tour he did as the band master of a large group of musicians, a tour that resulted in two pretty big hits for Joe Cocker here in Australia, and probably brought Leon Russell penned songs to the forefront of some Disc Jockey’s minds here in Australia, hence some of his early songs becoming hits here in Australia.

As I said about this particular song, the piano introduction is so iconic and you instantly know the song. Leon wrote the song back in 1970, and Ray Charles copied the song for his cover almost note for note.

Leon Russell was famed in the U.S. as a session musician for a number of instruments piano mainly, and he worked with so many of the big name artists of the time in the 1960s. He was also one of that select group of session musicians who became known as ‘The Wrecking Crew’, and as part of that group, provided backing on some of the greatest albums to come out of that time from the biggest bands and solo artists.

Although his own career as a recording artist is good but not particularly great, some of the songs he wrote have become huge hits for other artists, and this one I have featured today was a huge hit for Ray Charles in the early 1990s.

This particular song in fact has been covered by upwards of 50 other artists across the years.

Leon Russell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, and also the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Sadly, Leon passed away in November last year.

The body of work he created during his life is what gives Leon Russell legendary status, and this is just one song among many that were wtitten by him that we all know, but we are always surprised to learn hat it was he who wrote them.
