SEAN RUBINSZTEIN-DUNLOP, REPORTER: In May this year, a young zealot from the suburbs of Sydney was on an evangelical mission.
Ali Assad, 22 years old, was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as an emissary for an Australian charity…. But while Ali Assad was delivering aid to refugee children in Malaysia, the Australian Government was paying him thousands of dollars to look after children in Sydney…
This part-time preacher could face 10 years in jail over an alleged multi-million dollar scam that was staggeringly simple…Government officials were convinced Ali Assad was at home, providing childcare in this housing estate in Sydney’s south-west, when his travel records and even his Facebook page showed he was in Malaysia.
In the past year Ali Assad made three trips to Kuala Lumpur and posted the photos online. During each period, he allegedly claimed thousands of dollars in rebates for hundreds of hours of work in his Sydney home…
We’ve obtained the police statement of allegations against Ali Assad. It says the Australian Government paid Assad more than $150,000 in the past financial year for more than 20,500 hours of childcare.
To earn that massive salary, Assad would have needed to care for the maximum of seven children at once for more than eight hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days in a row.
Ali Assad was part of a much bigger operation, based in Sydney’s west.
According to police, …. Ali Assad was employed by a family day care service that has its offices on this street. And he was allegedly working with his boss to defraud the taxpayer… His name is Ibrahim Omar. He and his brother employ nearly 600 family day-care providers, including Ali Assad… Ibrahim Omar’s business connections should have raised eyebrows already then. He was in the childcare business with the man who became Australia’s highest-ranking terrorist, Abu Sulayman, who is now based in Syria…
Ali Assad is out on bail and his charity is under investigation. It’s been accused by Lebanese prosecutors of funding Islamic State.
World Vision officials have professed to be “shocked” by the arrest in Israel last week of Mohammed El-Halabi, the head of the megacharity’s Gaza operations. Mr. Halabi is accused of repurposing over the course of 10 years up to $7.2 million a year, in cash and materials, to Hamas. That’s approximately 60% of World Vision’s total aid to Gaza.
