I have previously mentioned that this current U.S. Presidential campaign is getting more coverage here in Australia than for any other campaign in any previous year. In much the same manner as in the U.S. the Australian media are also favouring Hillary Clinton, and the coverage is almost totally one sided in favour of Hillary Clinton. This article is different from most reports and it is from an Australian media magazine, and it mentions how the U.S. media is giving far more coverage to the Hillary campaign than it is to the Trump campaign. It seems that the idea of equal coverage is favourable articles for Hillary, and unfavourable articles for Trump. This article deals with the two conventions and how both of them introduced grieving parents of U.S. military people killed in the line of duty. The parents who appeared for Hillary received virtually all the coverage while the parent who appeared at the Republican convention was in the main totally and utterly ignored. The mainstream media, let alone the ABC here in Australia, no longer even pretends it is providing an unbiased coverage of the presidential quests of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
As a case study in partisan journalism, this piece will look at media coverage of Khizr Khan, the Muslim father whose soldier son, Humayun, was killed in Iraq in 2004 while defending his squad. Then, by way of contrast, I’ll examine the attention given to bereaved mother Patricia Smith, who opposes Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House. Patricia who, you ask? Exactly! You have likely never heard of her, as she is definitely not part of the media narrative — despite, or because — her son was killed by terrorists who attacked the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi in 2012 during Hillary’s term as Secretary of State.
