Climate Change Australia – The Australian Media Has Tried To Drown The Maldives For 200 Years

In the lead up to the Paris Climate Change Conference (COP21)  those smaller Pacific Island Nations and other Island Nations are pressuring Australia again in an effort to enhance their chances at getting a better slice of the pie…..TonyfromOz.

From the Hobart Town Courier, February 17, 1837:

From the Canberra Times, September 26, 1988:

From, August 31, 2015:

But the Maldives’ beauty can’t mask the threat facing its idyllic islands, 80 per cent of which sit no more than one metre above sea level. Steadily rising ocean levels are poised to submerge the lowest nation on Earth within 100 years.

In fact, from 2009:

But some recent data challenge the widespread belief that the islands are destined to disappear…

Paul Kench of the University of Auckland in New Zealand… suggests the islands might move onto their reefs and build vertically, offsetting the potential threat of sea level rises. His research _ published together with other scientists from Australia, New Zealand and the Maldives _ shows some islands have rebuilt themselves as much as 1.6 feet (49 centimeters) higher…

Following the devastating 2004 Asian tsunami, many scientists assumed the Maldives would be damaged. But Kench and his colleagues not only found little evidence of island erosion, but also that the tsunami had washed sediment ashore, making some islands taller than they were before the catastrophe.

AAP is supposedly a straight news agency for the Australian media. But it seems to have turned into a green evangelical group:

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott will have to look desperate Pacific island leaders in the eye as he justifies Australia’s climate change policy and addiction to coal energy at official talks in Port Moresby.

Geraldine Doogue on ABC Radio National Breakfast interviews the President of Kiribati where both agree global warming is a menace, Kiribati is threatened and Australia should save it. Not the slightest suggestion from either that in fact there’s been no real warming for 18 years, Kiribati is not drowning and anything Australia does will make no difference.

It’s astonishing. Truth no longer matters.

For Geraldine:

Climate scientists have expressed surprise at findings that many low-lying Pacific islands are growing, not sinking.

Islands in Tuvalu, Kiribati and the Federated States of Micronesia are among those which have grown, largely due to coral debris, land reclamation and sediment.

The findings, published in the magazine New Scientist, were gathered by comparing changes to 27 Pacific islands over the last 20 to 60 years using historical aerial photos and satellite images.

Auckland University’s Associate Professor Paul Kench, a member of the team of scientists, says the results challenge the view that Pacific islands are sinking due to rising sea levels associated with climate change.

“Eighty per cent of the islands we’ve looked at have either remained about the same or, in fact, gotten larger,” he said.
