When it comes to guitar instrumentals, they don’t get better than this. There are many of them, but this one would have to be one of the best, if not the best.

Mason Williams was a comedy writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour TV show. He wrote this song and played it live on the show. After a number of weeks playing the song on the TV show, it started to become a huge hit, and I mean huge, not only in the U.S. but all across the Planet.

MasonWilliamsIt’s a difficult piece to play, and Mason Williams makes it look so easy. The guitar is a Classical guitar, and they are easy to recognise, as the head is slightly different from other acoustic guitars. Here, in this clip, where he has orchestral backing, Mason plays the guitar in the typical classical position with the guitar resting on his knee. Note also how he uses his fingernails to pick the strings rather than using a plectrum.

This video clip is from a show taken around the time the song was such a huge hit, and there are numerous other versions of the song, as he has played it across the years since that time.

It was first released in 1968, and it won three Grammy Awards, two of them for Mason Williams, and the third for the production and Arrangement for the song.

Mason Williams shares a unique place in American Awards history. While he won those Grammy Awards for this song, he also won an Emmy Award that same year for his comedy writing work for that Smothers Brothers TV show. He was also a Stand Up Comic on the show, so he was indeed quite versatile.

It’s not unique for artists to receive Awards for different bodies of work, and to receive a Grammy and an Emmy Award may be rare, but Mason Williams achieved both of these things in the same year.

Every time I hear this song, I stop and listen. It’s just such a beautiful piece of music.
