In the first two weeks of December 2015, The UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) will be holding COP21, their 21st Climate Change Conference, and this meeting will be held in Paris.

logocop21-ppalPresident Obama will (naturally) be attending and, as the perceived leader of the free World, he will be seeking to make a big splash.

In the lead up to this conference, the President has made a pledge to reduce emissions of Greenhouse Gases to a level 26 to 28% lower than what they were in 2005, and to achieve this by 2025.

That percentage figure actually seems to be reasonable, considering some Countries are aiming even higher than that.

It helps that the President has selected the year (2005) when those emissions were at their absolute maximum.

However, what actually does it mean when all the figures are worked out?

How do we know what the level was in 2005?

What level will this proposed reduction take us back to?

Does it relate back to The Kyoto Protocol from 1997, which called for a reduction to levels 5 to 7% lower than what they were in 1990?

Is this current pledge as seemingly drastic as that original Kyoto Protocol was?

Can a reduction like this be achieved?

What will it mean for electrical power generation?

Can a reduction in that power generation sector be achieved?

What would be the end result for electrical power generation if this reduction was to be achieved?

The answers to these questions are not only surprising, but in fact are scary.

Read as I explain the answers to each of these questions, and be horrified with the answers to some of them.

This is in fact something which is quite detailed in the explanation, but I try and lay it out in a way that can be understood. For seven years, I have been contributing at this site on matters related to what this is all about, and I have around 1,000 separate Posts on this and related subjects. Having said this, I spent more time on these two Posts than I have spent on anything I have written at this site. As I found the answer to each of those questions, it only made my research more involved, as more things came up which needed to be addressed. Because of that, the end result is quite long, and I have had to split it into two separate Posts, and the links to those Posts are below. Just click on the link to be taken to each of those Posts.
