THE FOUNDATION

“Let the American youth never forget, that they possess a noble inheritance, bought by the toils, and sufferings, and blood of their ancestors; and capacity, if wisely improved, and faithfully guarded, of transmitting to their latest posterity all the substantial blessings of life, the peaceful enjoyment of liberty, property, religion, and independence.” –Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution, 1833

Immigration Tidbits

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Monday that many illegal alien minors will “likely” stay in the U.S. if it’s determined “they face a credible threat of death upon their return to their home country.” Since the administration is so intent upon them staying, a new petition on the White House website demands that illegal minors be allowed to live at the White House. Even Democrats aren’t pleased with the bad immigration news because it’s not helping their case for “comprehensive” reform. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) has teamed up with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) to introduce legislation to accelerate immigration court hearings for minors in order to allow for deportation within 10 days. True, this is a political calculation for Cuellar to show Democrats are confronting the issue, but it’s progress.

Cease-Fire Fails

Egypt stepped in this week to broker a cease-fire agreement between Hamas and Israel. Initially, Israel accepted, but Hamas responded by firing more rockets into Israel from Gaza. Or as news reports said, Hamas’ “military wing” rejected the cease fire. National Review’s Jim Geraghty quipped, “Militant wings are the evil twins of geopolitics. If your organization has a military wing – as opposed to an actual, declared, uniforms-and-everything-military – you’re probably a troublemaker.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, “[W]e are prepared to continue and intensify our operation and protect our people.” And Israel has done just that in the last few hours.

Russia’s Justification

Violence in Ukraine has continued to escalate in recent days. The Washington Post reports, “Pro-Russian separatists asserted responsibility for shooting down a Ukrainian military plane and taking four of its crew members prisoner Monday.” And over the weekend, one Russian civilian was killed by an errant artillery shell allegedly fired by Ukrainian forces. The Russian Foreign Ministry had the gall to declare Moscow “considers this provocation as another act of aggression from Ukraine against sovereign territory of Russia and Russian citizens.” As if the entire episode wasn’t started by Russia. Nevertheless, it may provide all the “justification” Russia needs for further attacks on Ukraine.

Bergdahl’s Bonus?

America-hating Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl has been cleared for a desk job. The Associated Press reports, “Bergdahl has been decompressing and recuperating from the effects of captivity since his arrival there from a military base in Germany. Since he was handed over to U.S. special forces in Afghanistan on May 31, he has been debriefed for any possible intelligence he might have gleaned in his time with the Taliban. Otherwise, he has been gently coaxed back into a normal routine and a normal life, both physically and psychologically.” Investigators will now continue to pursue the truth of his actions and circumstances. If somehow they determine he was not a deserter, Bergdahl will receive $350,000 tax free – back pay plus compensation for being a prisoner of war. More…

Mossberg Heads to Texas

Connecticut is still learning first hand the implications of defying the constitutional right to bear arms with the passage of strict gun control measures last year. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., headquartered in North Haven, is the latest firearms manufacturer to announce it will take jobs and tax revenue elsewhere. Their pick? Why Texas, of course. “Investing in Texas was an easy decision,” says CEO Iver Mossberg. “It’s a state that is not only committed to economic growth but also honors and respects the Second Amendment and the firearm freedoms it guarantees for our customers.” Forbes’ Frank Miniter reports, “More than 90 percent of Mossberg’s guns are now made in Texas. Some of its Connecticut jobs are going there, too.” Unfortunately, this does little to deter Connecticut’s anti-gun leadership. Voters will need to address that issue. Meanwhile, we applaud Mossberg for taking action. They’re also always welcome in the great state of Tennessee. More…

RIGHT ANALYSIS

Part-Time Recovery

To hear the White House tell it, the recovery from the Great Recession is in full swing, with June’s unemployment report claiming nearly 300,000 new jobs created last month, the sixth straight month of job growth. Unfortunately, those jobs weren’t full-time in high industries. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, full-time jobs decreased by 523,000 last month, while part-time jobs rose by 800,000.

The White House is no longer making a distinction between full-time and part-time jobs in its employment reports, and it’s easy to see why. Digging deeper into the numbers reveals that the so-called economic recovery is nothing of the kind. There are currently more than 28 million part-time workers in America, a quarter of them involuntary. In other words, more than seven million part-timers are taking whatever jobs they can get, often in low-wage industries. In some cases, two-income families are now logging the same number of hours that single-income families put in before the 2008 recession. These low-wage jobs now account for 44% of all labor growth since 2010.

The “Affordable” Care Act is largely to blame for this. Many businesses have cut back on positions and reduced new hires in order to stay below the 50-employee threshold set by the law’s employer mandate. IHT Staffing, a temp agency in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, maintains that 90% of their employers are hiring part-time as opposed to full-time specifically because of ObamaCare. And James Sherk, an economic analyst with The Heritage Foundation, says, “ObamaCare will further reduce hours by increasing the costs of hiring full-time employees while discouraging workers from working full-time.”

The part-time work force now includes a dangerously large portion of the prime working population. Total participation in the work force is at 62.8%, a 36-year low. This is unsustainable if the economy is ever expected to truly grow. With fewer workers making more than enough money to cover basic expenses, there will be less capital in the economy overall, meaning lower consumption of more than just basic necessities, less investment in new businesses and new technologies, and the slow painful conversion of America to a service-driven economy.

The economic policies of the Obama administration are to “fundamentally transform the United States of America.” It’s working. The stimulus was a bust economically but increased government spending permanently. The Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing has arguably kept the economy from plunging into depression, but it caused inflation to run rampant with life’s necessities. The White House continues to paper over this record by trumpeting numbers that are deliberately misrepresenting the real economic picture. But you don’t have to be an economist to figure this out. If the economy is doing so well, then why are you and so many of your friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet?

Bad and Worse Options in Iraq

The headlines about violence in Iraq have faded somewhat, but that doesn’t mean all is well. The problem now is pinning down what the problem is. In recent months, jihadis from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), now calling itself simply the Islamic State, have overrun much of northern Iraq, though their advance has seemingly been slowed by the Iraqi military. So where do things stand?

OPINION IN BRIEF

Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965): “The inherent vice of capitalism is the uneven division of blessings, while the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal division of misery.”

Columnist Thomas Sowell: “Whenever Democrats are in real trouble politically, the Republicans seem to come up with something new that distracts the public’s attention from the Democrats’ problems. Who says Republicans are not compassionate? … Does President Obama deserve to be sued or impeached? Yes! Is there a snowball’s chance in hell that either the lawsuit or an impeachment will succeed? No! … Neither of these actions is going to do anything to stop Obama, or even discredit him – and both can create a distraction that draws attention away from the Democrats’ disasters during an election year.. … This year’s elections – especially the Senate elections – can decide the fate of this country for a long time to come. That is why Republicans’ launching of foredoomed symbolic actions like lawsuits and impeachment is such an irresponsible self-indulgence. When the country is at a historic crossroads is not the time for futile gestures like this, which can create bigger disasters than we already have.”

Columnist Cal Thomas: “At last, an Obama administration official has come out in favor of a fence. He promises it will bring security to people on both sides of the border. Unfortunately, Philip Gordon, National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf, was not speaking of a border fence between the United States and Mexico, but a fence between the West Bank and the 1967 Israeli border. That fence, he said, would be built after Israel relinquishes the territory in exchange for an empty promise of ‘peace’ with the Palestinians. Apparently Gordon hasn’t noticed that missiles fly over fences. If anyone needs more proof that the land-for-peace formula was stillborn when first proposed, Gaza is the latest example. … Gordon repeated the oft-heard statement that the United States is ‘Israel’s greatest defender and closest friend,’ but friends don’t ask friends to commit suicide, which is precisely what the false doctrine of moral equivalency would bring to the Jewish state.”

Comedian Argus Hamilton: “Chelsea Clinton was reported to be getting a six hundred thousand dollar salary for her job as a part time correspondent. NBC executives said that it’s nothing to get excited about. They say Chelsea’s salary is all part of NBC’s program to help children born into poverty.”
