Democracy Rising PA – Be An Active Part Of An Honest Election

By Tim Potts ~

There are two parts to an honest election. One is preventing ineligible people from voting. That’s why PA has a new voter ID law, even though it won’t take full effect until 2013 and even though voter impersonation is already a crime.

The other part of an honest election is making sure that eligible citizens actually vote. Efforts to prevent eligible voters from casting their ballots through voter intimidation or misinformation about when and how to vote are just as illegal – and destructive to representative democracy – as impersonating someone else in order to vote.

We know that some who are not committed to American representative democracy will try to disrupt and discourage voters before and on November 6. It happens in every election, and the coming election is no different. In fact, it may be worse considering how close the election is expected to be.

You can be part of ensuring that PA’s elections are as honest as the law requires – and every eligible voter deserves.

Common Cause/PA is looking for volunteers to monitor dozens of polling places in PA that have a history of being at-risk for voting irregularities. The Poll Monitors will assist voters and report possible voter intimidation to hotlines set up to receive such reports.

CC/PA also needs volunteers to conduct exit polling at some polling places. Exit Pollers will ask voters about the quality of their Election Day experience as part of a national research project.

Volunteers are needed in:

  • Pittsburgh*
  • State College
  • Harrisburg*
  • Hazelton*
  • Allentown*
  • Bethlehem*
  • Reading*
  • West Chester
  • Chester*
  • Media/Cheyney University

* These are sites where both monitors and exit pollers are needed. The others need one or the other.

Poll Monitor shifts are 7-11:30 a.m., 11:30-4 p.m., or 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Election Day. Exit polling shifts are 7:00-9:00 a.m., 11:00-1:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m. You may sign up for more than one shift.

If you live in or near these communities and are willing and able to ensure honest elections, please email or call Matthew Goodro with questions or to sign up for a training session: mgoodro@commoncause.org     774-239-2935.

DR supporters already demonstrate their commitment to integrity in government. We hope you will assist Common Cause in this important work, too.

Thanks.
