Climate Change – Lovelock repents: Flannery, Gore and I Were “Alarmist”

Gaia guru James Lovelock, 2006, near the height of the global warming hysteria:

I have to tell you, as members of the Earth’s family and an intimate part of it, that you and especially civilisation are in grave danger…

We have given Gaia a fever and soon her condition will worsen to a state like a coma…. We are responsible and will suffer the consequences: as the century progresses, the temperature will rise 8 degrees centigrade in temperate regions and 5 degrees in the tropics…. We are in a fool’s climate, accidentally kept cool by smoke, and before this century is over billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable.

Gaia guru James Lovelock today, after more than a decade of no warming, admits he was “alarmist”:

Lovelock, 92, is writing a new book in which he will say climate change is still happening, but not as quickly as he once feared….  (The) professor admitted in a telephone interview with that he now thinks he had been “extrapolating too far”…

“The problem is we don’t know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago. That led to some alarmist books – mine included – because it looked clear-cut, but it hasn’t happened,” Lovelock said…

The world has not warmed up very much since the millennium. Twelve years is a reasonable time… it (the temperature) has stayed almost constant, whereas it should have been rising — carbon dioxide is rising, no question about that.”

He pointed to Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” and Tim Flannery’s “The Weather Makers” as other examples of “alarmist” forecasts of the future.

Hold the scaremongers to account.

It is impossible to exaggerate how ridiculosly apocalyptic the professional doomsayers were back then, and how almost all the media whipped along the hysteria that any responsible journalist should have questioned. Here’s part of a truly astonishing report on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair in 2007, which showed huge balls of fire smashing into cities by the end of the century:

This is six degrees. Flash floods. Gas and methane fireballs racing across the globe with the power of atomic bombs. Life on earth ends in apocalyptic storms

It’s easy to pass off as scare-mongering. But what you’re watching is real science. A three dimensional view of what might happen to our planet as a result of climate change. It paints a dark and devastating picture…

Alarmist journalist Mark Lynas, author of Six Degrees, was extensively interviewed:

I think farming is going to be history in Australia by and large within 50- 100 years.

This kind of alarmist trash was screened or printed regularly in our media from 2006 to 2008, yet none of it was challenged by Media Watch, which last night instead devoted a segment to mocking Alan Jones over minor slips in tackling alarmists.
