Last week I featured one of the most beautiful voices in modern music, Linda Ronstadt, and this week I have another who ranks right up there when it comes to beautiful voices, Dusty Springfield.

I’ve featured one of her songs from the days when she was one of the hottest female singers on the Planet, when virtually everything she released turned into a smash hit. That song, ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’, from 1967, is featured at this link.

Dusty was born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, and, a tomboy when she was young, she took the stage name Dusty when she joined her brother Dion in the 3 piece English band The Springfields, who had a monster hit with ‘Silver Threads And Golden Needles’. Even while they were an English band, they wanted to achieve an American sound, so they named themselves the Springfields. Dion took the name of Tom Springfield, and Mary chose her tomboy name from when she was a young girl, Dusty.

Dusty had a voice far and away better than what she could achieve as a member of The Springfields, and she branched out into a solo career in late 1963, with her first song ‘I Only Want To Be With You’, which was the first of her many smash hits from the 60’s.

Over the next six years, nearly every song she released went into the Top Ten, and she had 13 songs that made it that high.

She toured to the U.S. often, and recorded in Memphis, around the time of her somewhat controversial song, ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’.

At one stage, Dusty was the highest paid female touring act on the circuit.

She had her own TV show in the UK which ran for two seasons.

While the 70’s and 80’s saw songs in the vein that Dusty sang fall out of favour somewhat, she was still a huge touring act and sang to sold out audiences wherever she appeared.

In 1990, she released ‘Reputation’, her thirteenth, and second last studio album, which again made it high into the UK albums carts.

This song featured today, ‘Arrested By You’ is taken from that album. The song was written by Rupert Hine and Jeanette Obstoj.

In 1994 Dusty was diagnosed with breast cancer, and, after treatment, was in remission for two years before the cancer reappeared. She was again treated, but succumbed in 1999.

She was scheduled to appear in Cleveland for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but she passed away ten days before that event.

When Elton John accepted the award on her behalf, as part of his acceptance speech he said of Dusty:

I think she is the greatest white singer that there ever has been.

A truer word was never spoken.
