Cancun Climate Conference – U.N. Proposes Rationing …..Everything!

Posted on Tue 11/30/2010 by

Nearly three years ago now, I started contributing posts here on the subject of what would need to be done to comply with what was being asked in The Kyoto Protocol.

This Kyoto Protocol called for a drastic cutback in the emissions of Carbon Dioxide, (CO2) and because the largest source of those emissions is the Coal Fired Electrical Power Generating sector, then this would effectively mean cutting back on the number of those power plants.

What I wanted to do with that series of posts was to write from the point of view of actually believing those CO2 emissions were causing catastrophic Global Warming, (now called Climate Change) and to explain the ramifications of that belief with respect to that electrical power generating sector.

I covered as much as possible on what would need to be done to comply with the Protocol, and since that series ended after more than 50 separate posts, I have continued to write here on the same thing and related matters as well, because they are all tied inexorably together.

Three or four times now I have mentioned a highly emotive thing with relation to this. To actually make those cutbacks at the level that is required, then there are only two possible things that can result from this blind adherence to what we are being told we must do:

Either we restrict the Third World in their efforts to industrialise to bring themselves up to somewhere near  the standard of living that we in the Western World have, or we go back and join them in that Third World.

As you can plainly see, that is a highly emotive thing to say, especially that second part about us going back to join them in the Third World.

It would be highly immoral for us to deny those Developing Countries the moral imperative of bringing themselves up to our standard of living, and no Government seeking to remain in Office would even consider cutbacks that would take us back to the standard of living in those Third World Countries.

Currently under way in Cancun Mexico is the  COP 16 Climate Change Conference, sponsored by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. (UNFCCC)

One of the first media releases from that first day details exactly the same emotive statement I have made those three or four times now, and what they are calling for is not one part of that emotive statement, but both of them.

Read the article at this link very carefully, and I’ll paraphrase a couple of sections from that and comment on them.

The main introductory statement is this:

Global warming is now such a serious threat to mankind that climate change experts are calling for Second World War-style rationing in rich countries to bring down carbon emissions.

Showing right up front is the fact that whoever made the statement is clueless about what he is saying, in that he doesn’t refer to it as Carbon Dioxide, (CO2) the actual emissions, but just as Carbon emissions. You may think of that as being picky, but they are two completely different things, and he’s not alone in labeling it like this, because they all do it. The article then goes on to say:

In one paper Professor Kevin Anderson, Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, said the only way to reduce global emissions enough is to halt economic growth in the rich world over the next twenty years.

I can just picture this now. Just what this will do to those already Developed Countries is something not even worth considering. I cannot see the day that any Government, let alone EVERY Government goes along with this, even in the tiniest way possible, let alone for 20 years. It is just something that will never happen, no matter what.

Then, the article goes on to say:

This would mean a drastic change in lifestyles for many people as everyone will have to buy less ‘carbon intensive’ goods and services such as long haul flights and fuel hungry cars.

This could mean a limit on electricity so people are forced to turn the heating down, turn off the lights and replace old electrical goods like huge fridges with more efficient models. Food that has travelled from abroad may be limited as will goods that require a lot of energy to manufacture.

See how the person making this statement has little, if any idea what he is even saying. However, the shameful thing is that he has not even bothered to find out the real implications of what he’s calling for. He aims his statement directly at a personal level. Anything done even at the singular personal level would have little if any effect on overall emissions.

His second statement about the rationing of electrical power is also aimed at the personal level, and by extrapolation, the Residential sector only, that electricity you use in your own homes. Turn down the heating. Turn off your lights. Get rid of fridges etc. Use less hot water, and turn down the water heating thermostat. Use less electrical appliances.

What he fails to even consider is just how electrical power is consumed.

It is consumed in three sectors. The residential sector, where he calls for those cutbacks consumes 38% of all power. The Commerce sector consumes 37%, and the Industrial sector consumes 24%, so while he calls for minor cutbacks in that one sector, those other sectors consume almost two thirds of all electrical power. His calls for rationing, if extrapolated out to those two sectors would mean huge cutbacks, and as those two sectors are where people work, then those cutbacks would create unemployment on a scale so massive, that even the high unemployment levels now would seem minute by comparison. This would lead to rioting in the streets, not just a case of people shrugging it off for the good of the Planet. You take away people’s livelihood, and there will be anarchy on a scale not worth even contemplating.

Another statement from the Conference says:

A recent study by the UN Environment Programme showed the voluntary pledges by countries to curb emissions under the Copenhagen Accord, drawn up at the climate talks last year, will not be sufficient to keep global temperatures from rising.

So, in effect, that initial LEGALLY BINDING end result from The Kyoto Protocol for those 152 Annex 2 Countries to only report their emissions is now not enough either. (See this link for further information)

Other releases to come out of Cancun also mention the need for more money to be raised. Fancy that!

Didn’t see that coming!

One of the main areas to be discussed at this year’s climate talks is the issue of finance for poor countries to help them cope with the impacts of climate change and develop on a low-carbon path.

Hence, the bar needs to be raised for the amounts of financial commitment from rich Countries, with a figure of 100 Billion US dollars a year agreed as a goal at last year’s talks in Copenhagen now considered to be the low baseline starting point, and in fact needing to be considerably higher than that.

The United Nations, that erstwhile body set up to ‘look after’ those people from the undeveloped Countries across the World has succeeded in throwing those same people it was meant to protect under the bus, by now demanding that they cut back on their attempts to come up a notch towards our standard of living.

Now it’s adding to that by proposing to throw the Western World under the bus to join them, telling us we now have to halt our economic growth for the next 20 years.

If you think that I’m over reacting in saying this, then consider this.

How happy are you that you are now being dictated to in every aspect of your daily life by the UN. How happy are you that the elected Government of your Country will be dictated to by the UN, an unelected body telling you and your Government what to do, how to do it, how often you can do it, to pay for the privilege, and to give them more money on top again.

Just who gets to select who gets rationed? Will it be everybody, or just selected people? Who gets to select what gets rationed, and what portion those rations will be? Who gets to select who keeps their jobs? Will hospitals be part of the rationing process? Will Governments also be subjected to this rationing?

This is comedy fast descending into farce.
