Sunday Music – Stranger On The Shore

Today’s music video is ‘Stranger On The Shore’ from Mr. Acker Bilk.

Mr. Acker Bilk (Bernard Stanley Bilk) would have to be one of the smoothest clarinetists to grace that instrument. He worked in bands for 8 years and had a string on minor hits in the U.K. and then hit it big time with this monster hit he wrote in 1962, a tune that has become his trademark. He wrote the song for a British television series, and released it on an album, using the backing of a string section, which he hadn’t done previously. This song stayed in the British charts for an unprecedented at the time 55 weeks, and made it to Number one on the U.S. Billboard Singles chart, making him the first British male to top that U.S. chart, Vera Lynn the first British artist to top that chart 10 years earlier. He is known as ‘The Great Master Of The Clarinet’, and lovingly describes this famous song of his as ‘his old age pension’.

Again, this song came out long before music videos were thought of, and this video combines beach scenes with his remarkable song.
