Petula Clark is another of those classic cases of a singer having a long recording career, and then, seemingly, they become an overnight success. Pet Clark started her long singing career in the late 40′s while still a teenager. Then in the early 60′s she had a series of huge hits, at the beginning of what is termed the British Invasion.

Prior to this success, she had already released 7 albums, and 70 Singles. Of those Singles, 9 of them went into the Top Ten in her homeland, the UK, including one Single that was a Number One Hit, Sailor, in 1961.

Then came the Monster smash hit, Downtown, released in 1964, and this started that run of hits that lasted for four years, during which time she had a number of huge hits, and broke into the U.S.  charts in a major way.

This song I have featured today My Love, released in 1965, was the second of those huge hits, not only in the U.S. but all across the World. Her regular song writer was the famed Tony Hatch, and this song was written on a flight to the U.S. where Petula was going, to feature her songs with a U.S. tour, while she was ‘hot’ there. The song was recorded in Hollywood at the famous Western Studios and the backing was done by the legendary group of musicians known as The Wrecking Crew, who did the backing on so many of those monster hits from that time.

This was her second Number One in the U.S. and in those four or so years she was at the peak of her talent, she had a further 3 Number Ones in the U.S. and five more that were either Number Two or Three.

During this time, her songs were doing just as well here in Australia, and in fact some of her songs that did not chart as well in either the U.S. or the UK were huge hits here in Australia.

In her long career, Pet Clark has released 29 Albums, and 135 Singles. Overall, she has sold more than 68 Million records, making her one of the biggest selling female singers of all time.

During that time she was a huge success in the U.S. Pet Clark was the first English female singer to have Two Number One Hits in the U.S.

Petula Clark was one of those long list of singers from England around that time, one who had such a beautiful voice, and some wonderful songs that have become part of the lives of those who started to appreciate music around that time.
