Overnight, we learned of the passing of Whitney Houston, perhaps one of the most awarded female singing artists of all time. Among her lifetime achievement of 450 Awards are 6 Grammy Awards, and 2 Emmy’s as well, along with a plethora of other music awards.
She has had a string of hits, among them 11 Number Ones in that largest of markets, the U.S. and those Number Ones are almost uncountable across the rest of the World. Most of those Number Ones were in fact virtually all of them Monster Number Ones.
She has sold over 170 Million albums, singles and music videos.
Her biggest Hit by far would be ‘I Will Always Love You’, a song written by Dolly Parton, and she had a hit with it on the Country Charts prior to Whitney’s release of the song after reworking it from the original. That song was on the sound track for the movie ‘The Bodyguard’, and she played the lead role in the movie as well. That Album is either Gold, Platinum or multi Platinum in 10 Countries.
The featured song for today was released by Whitney in 1986, and it became a Monster Number One for her all across the Planet, the third of her long list of Number One Hits.
The song was written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed, and was originally recorded and released by George Benson in 1977. His original treatment saw the song as an R and B version and it made it to Number 2 on the U.S. R and B chart, and crossed over into the mainstream chart where it made it into the Top Forty Hit Charts.
Originally, she was discouraged from releasing the song as a single, but she really wanted to release it, and when it was released, it became one of her most requested songs, and arguably, would probably be up there as one of two songs she will be remembered by.
In recent years, Whitney had a troubled life, but here, and today, it is the place to remember her for her absolutely beautiful voice, the range she had, and the number of wonderful songs she gave all of us.
Whitney was only 48 years and was preparing to attend this year’s Grammy Awards.
This is a sad loss to the music Industry, but we have the wonderful songs that will stay with us, this song featured today among the best of them.
Vale Whitney Houston. She had the voice of an angel, and now she’s singing with the angels.
