It’s National Security, Stupid

Much has been made about the state of our economy and pundits are predicting that it will be the most important issue of the upcoming election. That would be a mistake – and making it the election’s big issue is buying into a Democrat ploy.

The Democrats will tell us how bad our economy is. They will claim we are in a recession. They will moan about the poor and middle class barely being able to pay the rent. My favorite will be – most likely coming from John Edwards – the line where some poor single mother will have to pick between the rent and the heat to keep her kids warm. Baloney.

Fact: we are not in a recession. Our economy is not as strong as it could be, but it is by no means in poor shape. Democrats poll higher when the economy is poor, thus they want you to think we’re going into a depression the likes we’ve never seen before. The real election focus should be on national security – a topic Republicans normally poll high with.

We have a virtually unguarded southern border where OTMs (”other than Mexicans”) can freely travel past. We are in a global war on terrorism with a brutal enemy that wants our very way of life ended. We have a war going on in Iraq that is finally seeing real and substantial progress. But voters are supposed to forget that and focus on an economy that isn’t anywhere near a recession?

It’s no wonder the Democrats want to derail our focus from national security to the economy. Remember when illegal immigration – which has undeniable ties to national security – was the national issue du jour? Republican numbers soared and Democrats were seen as trying to ignore the rule of law for foreigners to come into our nation illegally. And look at the front running Democrats’ positions on these topics – Obama wants our troops out of Iraq (a by the end of 2008), Clinton says President Bush regarding the war (and changes her position as often as the wind), and Edwards is busy talking about. All want a quasi-immediate pullout from Iraq – that is a sign that they don’t take this war and the existential threat against America and the West seriously enough.

In contrast, look at the leading Republicans. Romney takes a hard line approach to the war and on terrorism. According to one of Romney’s advisors, Cofer Black, a former CIA and State Department official, “The United States faces a new generation of global threats and challenges. Governor Romney recognizes the threats before us and has already laid out the policies needed to give our men and women the tools they need to protect our country.” Romney has also garnered the of Dr. Walid Phares, a leading expert on Islamic Jihad . . .

. . . Republicans get it; Democrats don’t want you to. It’s in their best interest. Don’t let shady politicians who put their own campaigns above national security change the topics that should mean most to us . . .
