Israel And The Gaza Strip

In July 2005, shortly before lapsing into a coma, former prime minister Ariel Sharon turned the Gaza Strip over to the Palestinians and evicted 9,000 Israeli settlers. This was to demonstrate to the international community that Israel was serious about creating a Palestinian state. The Palestinians promptly destroyed the economy by stealing equipment from the many greenhouses left by the settlers.
Then, in June 2007, the Palestinians fought each other for control of Gaza, with Hamas winning and the Palestinian Authority thrown out. Hamas was branded a terrorist entity and boycotted by many countries, but Iran and others intent on destroying Israel funneled money and weapons to Hamas and made Gaza a haven for terrorists.
Since the takeover, Hamas has lobbed thousands of rockets and mortars into Israel. The Israelis finally started sealing the border crossings and cutting off fuel and electricity. The next event was predictable, with the U.N. refugee organization (UNRWA) whining about a “humanitarian crisis” and presenting a U.N. resolution against Israel without mentioning the rockets. Today the Palestinians broke down the Egypt-Gaza barrier and tens of thousands poured into Egypt. Good, let Egypt take care of them.
All Israel wants is that the rocket and mortar fire cease. What if Mexico started shooting rockets into our border states? Would we go to the U.N. for diplomatic negotiations? Will Rogers said, “Diplomacy is saying ‘nice doggie’ while looking for a rock”. Israel needs a bigger rock.
